Revisiting Manhattan House

Apparently, I like to torture myself.  What else could explain why I keep going back to The Manhattan House website? Before we left the city for the suburbs ten years ago, Manhattan House was our home.  At the time we lived there, it was just another rental on the Upper East Side and looked nothing like the swank building it's become.  Sure, the location was great, the fact that this massive structure took up a whole city block was unusual, and I'd even heard it was the first post war apartment building built in the city.  But, Rita Konig and Celery Kemble (amongst others) were not designing it's show house interiors, and since it has gone all luxury condo it's really never looked so chic!  I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for this place, it's where we became parents, bringing our first baby home from the hospital to our apartment here.  And, now in addition to all these fond memories, I love The Manhattan House, for the stylish showplace it has become.

    I can totally understand why you continue to revisit here - it's fabulous. I especially love the sophisticated unexpected combinations in Celerie Kemble's work here.

    We know that Celerie was involved with MH (since we did the flowers for her apartment) but Rita, too?! What a great way to update a prewar in NYC!

    Just gorgeous and you can't beat the location. The city would be hard to live w/ kids I think but it must have been wonderful as a single couple. xo

    You clearly started a trend, and I'm sure your apartment looked fabulous when you lived there. Those first homes always have a dear place in the heart. Great memories. How fun that you can "virtually visit" from time to time through the website and see your old home in such great shape!

    I cant believe you used to live there! I looked at an apartment there when I was apartment hunting 3 years ago...There was a lot of shady stuff going on there between the developers, real estate agents and the renters who were being thrown out... It was a building in turmoil and ultimately we went with something in a much smaller boutique building.

    Crazy though!

    We are just beginning the do we stay in the city or move to the suburbs convo-- have a few years to figure it out but there are pros and cons to both. 60's/70's on the UES is really my favorite place to live! Seeing pics of your pretty home chalks up another point for Westchester though...

    My great grandmother lived in the beautiful penthouse in the Manhattan House and we all have such fond memories of that building - but this was in the 70s and 80s. What a small world!
