This was the first mushroom to pop up on my radar last year. Part of Anthropologie's collection, no doubt tied into the Alice in Wonderland movie mania. It's quirky, I thought nothing of it...
Last Spring, during a show house tour, I stumbled across these babies. Each room was assigned a Broadway show as its' inspiration. This was the "Hair" room, so the mushrooms sort of made sense.
Finally, last week over at
The Cote de Texas, I noticed this group of mushrooms, in an image from the December 2010 issue of Architectural Digest.
So what's going on here? Trend? Coincidence? I have no idea! I just know that I haven't seen this many mushrooms since the seventies. Which makes me wonder what's next, macrame wall hangings?
Hmmm.... I'll take my mushrooms stuffed! xo

ReplyDeleteInteresting... I guess it makes sense that it would be part of a "woodland" trend, together with the fur and the stag's heads. Not sure I would want one in my house though - there wouldn't be "mush room" for anything else ;)
ReplyDeleteThey're sweet but I think more for a playroom than living room. But then again, I want a stuffed lamb rocker for my living room so why not some mushrooms:)

ReplyDeleteNo, no, not macrame!! I liked Aspiring Kennedy's comment except you have documentation! And do you remember the Mushroom Planet books? They were a favorite when I was little. I realize - a bunch of disparate comments - sorry - I guess I'm a little stream of consciousness this morning.
ReplyDeleteI love shrooms but usually in my food! The spotty ones would look cute around our fire pit but I don't think I'd really have anywhere inside for one. And hey, macrame wall hangings might just come back - my mom still has hers in the basement so she's way ahead of the game :)

ReplyDeleteI think I will keep my mushrooms on food too....although these rooms are fun to look at. I have to admit when I saw the title pop up on my blogroll I instantly thought of college (not that I partook....but it was a popular party appearance...)

ReplyDeleteHa, yes, very groovy. Not sure they're for me. The ones in the AD article look wooden and more organic (is that possible?). For some reason I like those more. Who knows, I could jump on the shroom bandwagon sometime probably just as they're on the way out!

Well, it makes no difference if they are at the grocery store or designer store...they are always expensive! I'll go with the crochet...that's really cute stuff going on there :)

macrame wall hangings, so funny! yeah, i'm not sure if i'm digging them or if they are just sort of strange. i suppose to really throw off a space, adding one in an unexpected room would be fun, but also perhaps in a children's room? something to ponder i suppose. or hallucinate over? ;)

ReplyDeleteHave a real crush on mushrooms. They did a massive come back a couple of years ago in the world of children's interiors and art. They came along with the 'forest trend' along with owls, stags, squirrels and foxes.
ReplyDeleteAlso. In Sweden they are big around Xmas (and I don't mean in a magic way.. though that would help with the darkness I am sure.. :). There is a design classic 'candle stick' in a mushroom shape that is very popular.
Just generally, I think mushrooms look great and add a playful twist to adult environments as well. Love the 'Cote de Texas' pic.

I haven't noticed them out and about, but I bet I will now that you pointed them out. Maybe it's a little mini-trend? Need to see if they are popping up on fabrics (especially quilting fabrics). I'll keep my eyes open!

I'm also noticing the shroom trend and I actually think it's pretty cute. But what I really love is the "LOVE" neon sign. Looks so pretty and unexpected in that room.

When I went back to my alma mater a few weeks ago, they had an entire mushroom display set up outside. The trend is definitely on the rise back, and I do like it, especially the first photo of the stitched mushroom.
